Author Helen A. Rosburg records
promo from her new book "Blaze of Lightening, Roar of
Thunder"
February
2008
Fictional Author, Helen A. Rosburg was in the BMS studio to record a V/O
to promote her new book
published by Medallion Press. Having a background
in acting and theatre, she read a narrative excerpt for a
production to be produced in Los Angeles launching the release of her new
novel. Boggess edited the near flawless
takes.

"Helen A. Rosburg delves deeply into the subtleties
of the mountains and desert and into the deepest recesses of the human heart.
Blaze of Lightning, Roar of Thunder is a compelling novel of loss and renewal,
of revenge and redemption; a credible, inspiring tale of lasting love and
its power to endure, to flourish, to heal wounds deemed not healable. A one-sit
read."

Boggess is Producer & Arranger for a new CD
for vocalist, Kalvin
Bishop
Kalvin's a former backup
vocalist for Whitney Houston)
September 2007-2008

KALVIN BISHOP - Vocalist
Gary Boggess is Producer &
Arranger for Kalvin Bishop's next CD slated for release sometime in late
2008. In addition, Boggess will be the principal musician on the project,
but plans include hiring several "name" musicians as soloists. The project
will represent a fresh artistic direction for Kalvin... who's
inspirational roots include artists such as Peabo Bryson, Luther Vandross
and Marvin Gaye. Boggess & Bishop have chosen a new musical path that
includes two major songwriters who have written well over 130 "top ten hits"
for other artists. All the songs are new, including one or two written by
Kalvin, who's a songwriter in his own right. Kalvin is under the management
of Pat Brown of World Beat Entertainment (aka Starpower Entertainment). The
production schedule will proceed well into 2008, with the goal of producing
Kalvin's coup d'état effort to date.
Kalvin's Bio/Background...
Kalvin Bishop is a talented singer who's first break came in the early 90s
when his four man group did an impromptu audition for Bobby Brown at a New
York party, singing Debarge's "I Like It." Brown did indeed like it, and
signed them to his Triple B label. Though the group never recorded for Triple
B, Bishop got a gig singing background for Brown on Brown's 1992 album Bobby.
Brown then helped Bishop form the male-female duo Smoothe Sylk, which released
an album on MCA in 1994 (charting with the song "Slow") and toured with Whitney
Houston in 1995 in support of her Bodyguard soundtrack album. Mokah Records
and began work on his solo debut, Do What I Gotta Do. He also scored a coup
by landing legendary bassist Keni Burke -- who started as part of the Five
Stairsteps ("Ooh Child") and went on to work with many of the biggest stars
of the 70s and 80s -- to produce the disc and co-write almost all of the
cuts. -- Do What I Gotta Do is musically a solid effort.
In the end, Kalvin Bishop is an engaging singer.
The challenge for him will be to create intelligent lyrical content worthy
of the substantial vocal talent he
brings. Bio By Chris

Boggess
is boom operator for feature film "Scouts
Honor"
March 2007

Boggess walking the mic boom with the camera.
(Mixer Phillip Harris not pictured above).
Produced
on a budget of $400,000, "Scouts Honor" is one of several films being made
by PacAtlantic Pictures, a Pinellas-based company started 20 months ago by
actor/writer Jim Fitzpatrick
and his wife, actress Jodi
Knotts (cousin of actor Don Knotts). The producers are Jim Fitzpatrick
along with executive producers Kip Radigan, Sam Nicholson, and Jon Sheinberg
(son and now business partner of Universal Studio's 38-year reigning leader,
Sid Sheinberg and his brother Bill.) The film was shot over an eighteen
day schedule in March 2007.
Fitzpatrick, 47, grew up in Seminole. He was a college
football standout at Illinois State University and as a former football player
with the American Football League, he played for the Chicago Bears and Baltimore
Colts. He retired in 1985 after three years with the USFL's Tampa Bay
Bandits.
After his football career ended, he moved to New York for a co-starring role
on the soap opera "All My Children," then went to Hollywood to work on TV
series ("Star Trek: Enterprise") and in films ("Operation Delta Force 3:
Clear Target," "Armageddon").
In
addition to co-producing "Scouts Honor," Fitzpatrick wrote, directed and
had a role in the film. Because of his sports background he was able to recruit
an all-star roster of athletes and their children. Fitzpatrick rounded up
investors, co-producers and local actors, including 15 children ages 6 to
17, many of whom had taken his acting workshops. "This really is a
family affair," Fitzpatrick said. "I play the Scout leader and my wife, Jodi,
has a role as well as our sons, Jadon and J.J. Knotts." Jodie has appeared
on numerous TV shows including "Friends" and "ER," said her character, Katie,
is the mother of one of the Scouts, an outsider played by Jadon. About her
role, Jodie said: "Katie and her new and somewhat nerdy husband, Alan
(Fitzpatrick), have moved to Florida to get away from her former boyfriend,
a biker named Bobo played by actor
Corbin Timbrook. But the
adults are just the backdrop," "It's all about the kids" she
said.

The gang of bumbling motorcycle thugs is played by a unique
mix of professional athletes from the NFL, NBA, MLB, and WWBA. Tampa Bay
Buccaneers fullback Mike Alstott, who plays a biker named Mad Dog, worked
with his wife, Nicole, and their three sons on the film. "It was a new experience
for me," Alstott said. "I had a great time shooting it with Jim and I think
it will be an awesome movie. I did my own stunts and I got honey poured all
over me." Other bikers include Chidi Ahanotu (Buccaneers) as Stork, Simeon
Rice (Buccaneers) as Hulk, Jim Kelly (Buffalo Bills) as Psycho, former MLB
player Orestes Destrade (Florida Marlins) as Rat, and former NBA player
Matt Geiger (Miami Heat) as Condo. Plus, Tampa boxer Antonio Tarver plays
a minister.

BMS completes audio post
production for the feature film "Loren
Cass"
January-November 2007

Gary rebuilt the entire film's soundtrack from scratch! sound design, Audio
post editorials included: sound effects design, Foley, dialog editorials,
music editorials and final mixing for the film. The film has sparse dialog,
requiring that the Foley & sound effects design hold's the viewer's
attention. Boggess, as the Foley artist, walked for every actor in the film...
as well as performed every single move, often handling props and creating
detailed sound effects for every visible object in the
film.
NEWS...
Loren Cass was nominated
for New York City's 17th Annual IFP Gotham Awards -
2007
"Loren Cass," was one of 5 nominees selected from a pool of films chosen

No doubt, Boggess' sound design & audio work contributed
to the film's
success:

"Loren Cass was precisely shot and
sound-designed." - Museum Of Modern Art
(MoMa),
NYC
(2007)
"The sound editing and effects are truly astounding.
The fights sound like they are actual,
bone-crushing, terrifying fights. The dialog sounds like you are in the room,
the diner, the street,
etc., listening to it exactly. And, unlike, say, a dogma feature, the
reality of it is heightened by
whatever techniques Gary (Boggess) used. As an experience, as a sound and
imagery collage,
its
extraordinary..." -

In June 2007, "Loren Cass" was eligible for three awards including the

Latin singer-songwriter Ruth
Pizarro debutes album produced by Gary
Boggess
February
2007
|
Ruth Pizarro (CD) -
"Emaus"
Listen to a sample of the title cut:
"Emaus"
The music of "Emaus,"
was the collaborative effort of Ruth Pizarro and Gary Boggess. Ruth
is a very gifted songwriter and vocalist.
Her latin melodies inspired Boggess to produce some of the best latin-jazz
arrangements in his career. As producer & composer,
Boggess performed all of the CD's music, with exception to guitar, which
was played by virtuoso guitarist
Rick Pupello.
Rick's solo performances, along side with Boggess' keyboard solos, makes
his album of songs & contemporary latin-jazz music a must have CD!
The Producer, Gary Boggess, writes about the music...
"It isn't often I get to produce music I truly enjoy listening to. It's even
less often, that I get to produce music I love.
When Ruth Pizzaro came to me with this music, I wasn't sure if she wanted
me to arrange these simple melodies
'to sound' like their authentic ethnic counterparts, or to do something more
contemporary and 'American' sounding.
I think what we came up with is a little of both! Ruth came into the studio
and sang these songs acappella (without music) ...
and then I created contemporary arrangements around the melodies, just as
she sang them.
Some of these songs were Ruth's own originals and others were older Christian
hymns and choruses.
I didn't listen to any previous versions, and just created musical arrangements
that were (to me) what I heard 'in' the melodies themselves."
"It helps that while in my teen years (mid 1960's), I had an keen interest
in the bossa nova music of Antonio Carlos Jobim,
who graced the world with his simple melodies and dense orchestrations...
all with a touch of American jazz.
All of my life, I've been drawn to many diverse Latin and Hispanic musics...
and have written a few Latin-jazz based pieces for myself.
Then along comes Ruth... bearing the perfect vehicle for my appetite for
syncopation! I thoroughly enjoyed working on each of these songs."
"There's a mixture of musical flavors for everyone on this CD; Latin, Salsa,
Jazz, Rock, Blues, R&B,
and... ummm, did we miss anything? It's enough to make you want to dance!
Ruth's vocal performances speak for themselves.
Her sense of rhythm and cadence is remarkable, and her honest heart felt
performances are like a breath of fresh air amidst the music.
Making my task a little daunting, was the fact that all of the songs were
in Spanish, and I don't understand but one word of it, Si?"
"Although my role on this project was that of producer and
engineer, I was also the arranger and principal musician.
I performed all of the music on my MIDI keyboards... playing pianos, brass,
strings, percussions and orchestral instruments
via synthesizers and samplers. Having spent my life producing music using
electronic instruments,
I've learned what I can and can't do with them... avoiding things that cue
the listener that the instrumentation is being
generated via electronic means. This entire CD was recorded, edited and mixed
on the Microsound System DAW,
which provided me an arsenal of sound tools to produce the musical results
I crave."
"For this CD, we commissioned the skills of virtuoso guitarist, Rick Pupello,
who has worked with the "Bellamy Brother's",
Paul Schaffer from the "David Letterman Show" and many others. Rick's guitar
work on this music was perfectly matched to our artistic goals....
from his Spanish guitar work on "Celestial" to the powerful electric guitar
work in "Trust"... Rick gave us his best performances!"
"I am thrilled to have been involved with this music, and
am thankful that Ruth chose me for it.
Ruth's beautiful voice and personality made this project a delightful labor
of love...something I hope many will enjoy for years to come.
And after months of working on this CD, I still don't understand a word of
Spanish... but music IS the universal language, Si? (hehe)" - Gary Boggess

The progressive metal group,
Corridor, is producing a new concept
CD!
January 2007
Listen to a sample of Corridor:
"Planet Green"
Guitarist & songwriter, Kevin Sergent & the Corridor band
are working on their concept rock CD album here at BMS.
Mark Vanderbilt, the original vocalist of the power metal band
Kamelot, now
sings for Corridor.
The band is tracking all their guitars, bass, keyboards and vocals here at
BMS.
Boggess is acting as producer and musician, adding some synth tracks, and
writing orchestrations.
The project is following the production format for which BMS had been planned
& designed.
The drums are being recorded at another studio facility, and then imported
via CDr & DVD into the our
MicroSound 512 track computer DAW.
The game plan at BMS has always been to function more as an audio post mix
& mastering facility for music & film sound.
Boggess explains: "We don't record the drums here! This way I can keep
my facility's
costs down by not maintaining the large consoles, floor space and etc. Instead,
we built a 100% state-of-the-art
mixing room & environment with all the whistles and bells, from outboard
& software effects to a massive rack
of MIDI synths, samplers, software based ASIO synths & hundreds of effects.
With my discounted 30-hour block rates, we can spend all the
time it takes to edit and mix the music, adding those production details
in the mix that make the recording sound world class.
The lower costs allows my clients to spend more time on tracking their
instruments and vocals. Over the years,
I've observed that tracking drums is the most critical stage of a production,
but it accounts for less than 10% of the time,
money and effort required to produce a great sounding CD. It made sense to
let the larger studios have the 10% of the
budget for drum tracking, while my facility produced 90% of the project.
In the end with 90/10, my clients and I are saving thousands!"
Gary continues: "When I planned this facility, I decided to focus
on what I do best; editing, mixing & producing music!
I'm an accomplished composer/musician & a creative artist, and I can
offer my clients way more than the studios with just an engineer.
As a producer who owns a complete sound production studio, I bring 30 years
of artistic experience into each session.
It's a win/win scenario for the band and recording artists... because they
have the best of everything at a price
they can afford, with the production & master quality that equals that
of larger studios charging three times more per hour."
"For bands that record live at larger studios... I'm the next step in their
CD production because they can import their tracks here
and finish, thus lowering their costs without stepping down in mixing room
quality, or in recording & mix features. Importing tracks is
common practice with film sound, and that's why I have no fears about doing
it with music... because it works," Boggess concluded.
Band member Kevin Sergent said: "Gary... me and the guys in the band are
so glad we found you, because
we're achieving our dream CD here, and the production and mixes sound absolutely
fantastic!"
The Corridor project is validating the 90/10 game plan, and it's working
so well that it's hard to imagine working any other way.
Corridor's project is a "space travel" concept album and takes advantage
of Boggess' skills as a feature film sound effects desiger,
adding sound effects for transitions between songs and during some musical
features.

for Interlochen
Interlochen is a very pretigious arts camp for young music & arts students.
Recorded was Mozart's Concerto in G major with piano, and a solo
piece,Syrinx.
Irineo's musicianship was astounding. His playing was very articulate,
sensitive, dynamic and he demonstrated that he has a real understanding
of the music, it's nuances and emotion. It's rare that I am so inspired by
such a young person. It is clear to me Irineo has a great future in

The
Christian Science Monitor interviews sound designer, Gary Boggess, in an
article titled: "Unsung
Oscars"
First Published in February
2004
This was an interesting interview and story that the Christian Science
Monitor did with Gary Boggess just before
the 2004's Academy Awards. Interviewer Brad Rosenburg was doing a story on
various people who work in films behind the
scenes. Some of the interviews this article are humorous.

The Christian
Science Monitor: "Unsung Oscars"
They capture sound, set moods, create
the right noise - and even make buildings disappear.
But you may never have heard of them. Who are
they?
The right noise at the right
time...
Movies are full of sound
and fury, and often the sound is just as much pretend as the fury. The ones
who create the fake sounds are called foley artists. They're named for Jack
Foley, who gets credit for inventing the craft in the early days of sound.
"The first function of the foley artist is to re-create sound effects that
are directly related to human response or human physical action", says foley
artist Gary Boggess, "like walking, falling, or even kissing. The second
function is to replace the [sounds created by] body gestures and movements,
and these are usually done by rubbing cloth. The third role is to create
any sound effects for when a character is holding a prop. This would include
things like picking up or setting things down, putting on or taking off a
hat, or fumbling with a phone. Any other sound, like the squeal of a tire
or the ring of a bell, is usually pulled from a sound-effects library. A
bell is a bell is a bell", says Boggess. "A foley artist doesn't do that.
A gun would not be a foley effect, because guns, once they're triggered,
all basically sound the same. The art of foley lies in providing the walking
and cloth sounds in a film. That's because these are the most common things
that characters do in a film." According to Boggess, adding these sounds
can add a lot to a character and to a scene. "I've compared foley I've produced
with the sound from the set, he says, and it's amazing how much better the
foley sounds. It's more dramatic, and it helps you focus on the scene better
than the actual sound of that scene could." Boggess has enjoyed working on
a wide variety of films, from Batman and Robin to Puppet Master IV. He encourages
others to become foley artists, too. "Anyone who wants to become a foley
artist, however, should know how to approach the job. You have to have a
more musical approach to sound effects", Boggess says. "Sound effects in
film today are another kind of music."

Boggess goes on location to record Shiloh Christian
Center's new CD album...
June - December 2004
Gary was on location again! This time recording a 15 song concert/CD album
for Shiloh Christian Center in Melbourne, Florida.
With associate Carl Carden and assitant Mike Jones, a 16-track recording
studio was set up in about 4 hours.
Using (2) TASCAM DA-88 8-tracks in sync lock, and with an adequate number
of mics and direct lines, Boggess recorded
the entire project in about 2.25 hours. Shiloh's 55 member vocal ensemble
performed live without a retake.
Their band, pictured below was simply incredible! With all original
music, the entire church performed a practically flawless CD, LIVE!
Choir and music director, Johnathan Gordon, has a lot to proud of. The entire
recording has been digitized into Boggess' MicroSound DAW,
and is currently in the editorial and mixing stages. Many of the featured
vocalists have recut their vocals and
some additional harmonies in the studio. Songwriter /keyboardist, Tim Brown,
has been adding additional keyboard parts,
(strings, Rhodes, guitars & etc.) using Boggess' new Emulator 4X-Turbo
samplers.

Boggess & Carden provide location sound
for national cable TV commercial for ROOMS TO
GO!
January 2004
You'll probably see it a zillion times as it hit cable and the airwaves
on 4/10/04.
In January, Boggess was contracted to provide two production sound crews
to record audio for a series of major
Rooms To Go national TV spots. The spot was produced by LBC, (an LA ad firm)
and features a NASCAR race
car speeding around the RTG warehouse, "to get your order." A spectacular
ramp jump was filmed with the Matrix camera system,
and high speed 35mm film cameras, as the car flew into a Rooms To Go delivery
truck! The crew was about 51 people
strong, and was shot at RTG's 1/2 mile across warehouse in Lakeland, Florida.
Boggess worked boom with
associate & audio mixer, Carl Carden (CFPS), of Orlando. This was RTG's
biggest budget commercial production to date.
Gary subcontracted a 2nd sound unit, with crew Scott Clements, mixer, and
Fred Kupfee on boom.
The spot was produced by Lance Hannish and directed by Sean Hannish , both
from LA.
Of note: Production coordinator, Emily Hoffman was the greatest!

Boggess produces ADR for Forest Whitaker's new
feature film, "First Daughter"
(The Romantic Comedy Release Date: September 24, 2004)
ADR = automatic dialog replacement
Boggess Music & Sound was hired by ADR Supervisor, Kimberly
Harris, of Soundelux, (for
Regency/20th Century Fox
Films in Hollywood), to record "wild" ADR for feature film, "First Daughter",
directed by Forest Whitaker, and starring
Micheal Keaton. Actor Michael Milhoan, who's in the film as a secret
service agent named Block, had a few lines
that were too muffled in the original production sound, so he came to BMS
to rerecord them. In this case, Boggess had to
work with the original dialog lines in the form of MP3 files, as downloaded
from Soundelux's FTP site. Being that there wasn't
a video for lip-sync reference, we considered it "wild" ADR. Boggess
played Milhoan the cues on the headset and Milhoan
mimicked them as close as possible. (See pic below!)

Boggess edits &
remasters voice over demo CD for film actress, Marlene
Cameron
September
2004
Actess,
Marlene Cameron, brought all her cassettes and CD's of her voice work, and
we put our heads together to make
sense of it. Eventually, we assembled three demo collections of her work:
Narration, Story and Charactors.
Marlene is an Actress who uses her voice, and the microphone, in ways seldom
heard these days.
Marlene has done it all. With a lifetime of training, mostly in New
York, she has a resume overflowing with serious theatre,
radio, important films and, of course, commercials.
From the voice of ET for Universal Studios to the velvet voice chosen for
the Jaguar, Marlene gives the listener
a performance that is always on the money. Because Cameron is first
an actress, she can convincingly deliver any dialect,
any age and any emotion. Marlene is a pro you don't have to coach.
With so much work to her credit... she's able to deliver truly unique voice
overs, that stand out from ALL of the rest.

February 2003
B12 Productions, of Los Angeles, hired Gary
Boggess to sub-contract an on-location audio crew for a
TV commercial for Lotte-Snow's WAVE ice cream. The
commercial featured the New York Yankee's
new star slugger,
Hideki Matsui, of Japan. Matsui arrived in Tampa on a Monday and took
batting practice
on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Yankee's minor league complex. On Thursday,
he filmed
television commercials
across the bay in Clearwater, at the Philadelphia Phillies / Jack Russell
Memorial
Stadium,
for Lotte-Snow's WAVE
brand ice cream.
Boggess assembled a team that included:
Carl Carden - mixer, of Orlando...
Alex Hurley - video assist, of
Tampa...
and Gary Boggess - boom, also of
Tampa...

|
B12 Productions had the day scheduled from 7am until 6pm, and had
at least 30 on the film crew.
The commercial was shot on 35mm film, and although it was a clear sunny day,
huge 4' diameter lights
were used to make the ball field practically glow! Various scenes for
the commercial included a few crowd
reaction scenes, various children scenes and many action shots of Hideki
Matsui up at bat. Close up shots with
the product were meticulously setup as well. There were at least 50
Japanese tourists there that day,
almost all with cameras clicking away... and there must be 1000 photos of
Gary (holding the mic boom)
standing a few feet from Matsui, but we can't find one for this page!
Breakfast and lunch were also catered :)

"Seventh Veil" had it's World Premiere |
SEVENTH VEIL |
Gary Boggess was pressed into a three week task of fulling the roles
of Foley artist, Foley recordist and editor. For those readers who don't
know what Foley is, its all the sounds that people make when they move around,
like clothing, sitting, handling objects and walking. Gary whipped his studio
into the service of creating all of the Foley sounds needed in the film.
He gathered a small variety of size 9-1/2 shoes and created various surfaces
to walk on to re-create sidewalks, wood floors and even the beach. The film
was plagued by actors handling & figgeting with numerous props,
the evidence (a business card), cigarettes, a lighter and other items that
required unique sounds. After finishing the first of five reels, it was obvious
that the film was prop busy. It seemed every character picked something
up and nervously goofed around with it! Boggess also created amazingly
believable Foley sounds for seven dance scenes. This is very interesting,
because Boggess doesn't dance!
All of the Foley was recorded and edited with the MicroSound DAW system,
and without incident of crashing or losing any time due to hard disk related
problems. The final reels of effects strings were delivered via DA-88 eight-track
tapes and overnited to LA as they were finished. Seventh Veil
is a direct to video product to be released later this spring. Thanks to BMS
interns, Jim Metzendorf and Joe Hudek, Gary didn't need knee replacements
from running back and forth between the recording DAW to the isolation
booth!

Harpist Kirk Kupensky finishes his SECOND CD Project at
BMS
July thru November 1999
Kirk recorded his first CD album, "The Fog is Lifting", at
BMS in 1990, with flutist Laurie Sampsel. Since then, he has found an audience
via The Hearts of Space radio program on PBS and on NPR's Performance
Today radio magazine. The first album featured new music
for harp and flute, (never before recorded), by Alan Hovhaness.

Kirk just finished his second CD titled "The Eternal Dreamer",
which is a collection of contemplative classical works for solo harp. It
includes works by Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, Hovhaness, Tournier, and many others.
We experimented with multiple mic placements to give these performances a
spatial and ambient character, to enhance the music's introspective nature.
Using various hardware and software programs, we created (11) unique reverberant
spaces, and incorporated QSound software to give the each musical
piece 'tailor made' 3-D environments! The end result produces aural illusions
wherein the listener is literally enveloped, in multi-directional sound...
all without manipulating the performance or authenticity of the harp's natural
sound. No EQ, compression or other dynamic processing was used in the
production... just pure harp and mixcraft.

Boggess Music & Sound Upgrades Hardware & Software, Plus
QSound 3-D Surround!
December 2001
BMS has upgraded the core system and programs that make the studio's
MTU MicroSound the ultimate tool for music and film sound production. In
addition to the computer being upgraded to Windows '98 (Second edition),
we've upgraded to the next generation of MTU's MicroEditor software with
version 5.3, which now imports Direct X plugins. Likewise, we upgraded our
SoundForge software to version 5.0f also with DirectX plugins.
Plus, we added QSound Labs's QTools/AX and QCreator software, a 3-D
virtual surround program, to our growing arsenal of production tools. To
accomodate growth, we've increased our hard drive space from 4GB to 29GB.
We also beefed up our system's graphic card to ATI's All -In-Wonder 128 16MB
with Rage. The new card gives BMS 32bit color, photo capture, video capture
w/MPEG 1 & 2 formats, AVI formatting and basic digital video editing.
The new ATI card, in combination with our new SONY digital Hi-8 video camera,
editing software and Micrografx Simply 3-D animation software will enable
us to edit and produce our own in-house video and demo presentations for
internet, CD-ROM and VHS distribution. We also added a UMAX 36bit Astra 2000P
scanner to cover all of the graphic bases.
If all that were not enough...we installed the Creative's new Sound
Blaster Live MP3+ sound card, reinforcing Boggess Music & Sound's commitment
to provide all formats. This new card has four channel surround sound,
Cakewalk MIDI, 5x MP3 and 320kbps encoding, 120db S/N ratio, 64 voice

BMS studio produces music jingle for Mahoning Valley's new baseball
team; THE SCRAPPERS!!!
April 1999
In a combined effort , Winner Advertising, song writer, musician and singer
Rick Blackson and Boggess Music and Sound, have produced the jingle and musical
theme that will be used for the new baseball team, The Scappers. This spring,
the new baseball team will have it's first season in their new stadium ball
park, Cafaro Field, behind Cafaro's Eastwood Mall in Niles, Ohio. Rick Blackson
wrote the song that will serve as the promotional radio jingle and as the
theme for The Scrapper's television sports show, The Scrappers Baseball
Weekly, on TV-33. Blackson and Mary Jo Maluso (who sing together
professionally) are featured vocalists on the new jingle. Gary Boggess created
a variety of baseball related signature sound effects for the jingle. Blackson
amd his assistant engineer, Mike Moritz, used a Yamaha MIDI sequencer to
create the music track. Their MIDI files were then converted and imported
into Performer and then utilized the BMS's arsenal of MIDI samplers and
synths.

BMS completes audio post editorials and mix for
student film project: "VICTOR"
January thru February 1999
Student filmmaker, Marc Moody, from Ohio University's School of Film,
in Athens, Ohio, chose BMS to post his 30 minute student film musical
"Victor". Based on a true 'real life drama' that happened in
France in 1797. Boggess Music & Sound studios provided complete
post audio editorials, including dialog editing, sound effects, Foleys and
final mixing. The film was edited on AVID by Moody and transferred
to D2 by The Image Producers in Canfield, Ohio. The 16mm negatives
were conformed and printed at WRS in Pittsburgh, who did the audio
layback from D2 to mag film. Moody also plays one of the film's lead
roles, Phillipe.
The "Victor" film project was not without some problems. The film was
cut on an other version AVID system at the school in Athen, Ohio. When the
time came to import the AVID cut into a newer version software/hardware AVID,
in order to transfer to D2, the audio media files did not convert to the
more recent AVID system. This produced a major dilemma. Why Avid doesn't
grandfather backwards compatibility with older software is still a mystery.
The only alternative was to import the 8-tracks of AVID audio, wild, via
stereo pairs from DAT into the MicroSound DAW and re-sync. Then some other
obstacles emerged. The tracks were recorded across the eight track field
in odd configurations. Stereo pairs (L & R) were often on tracks 2 &
3, or 6 & 7, making it very difficult to reorganize the audio into phase
correct L & R signals. Worse, the sound was losing sync every 2 minutes.
Thanks to the patience of Gary Boggess and Marc Moody, AND the extremely
powerful editorial tools of MicroSound's MicroEditor program, we edited and
mixed the film's sound to produce a perfect soundtrack with
polish.

Boggess composes original music score for the new film: "BETWEEN
FRIENDS"
November '98 thru December 1998
LA Filmmaker, Audra Lindsey, chose Boggess Music & Sound to provide complete
post audio editorial services for her 45 minute film, "Between Friends".
Services included: dialog editing, sound effects design, Foley, background
SFX, original music score and final mixing. The film is about romantic
relationships that can develop within a circle of friends, some that last
and others that can't break past various obstacles. The film features approx.
20 minutes of original music by Gary Boggess, and incorporated the vocal
talents of Alphonso Oliver and Saudia Morris, with motown guitar work by
Carmen Horvath. The score has a mixture of pop and orchestral themes. The
open and end title piece, "Between Friends", was written to invoke the sound
of Al Green. The final soundtrack was layed back to D2 digital video at The
Image Producers in Canfield, Ohio.
This film was not without its audio problems either. The audio files where
often badly recorded due to poor mic placement. The entire production sound
and background elements had: a 10Khz oscillation, intense camera motor noise,
various hums, electrical clicks and hiss that often fell only 10db below
the dialog! Thanks to MicroSound's MicroTools DNoise software, we were able
to create a template that contained all of the offending noises, and REMOVE
them from the entire submixed portions of the soundtrack, without artifacts.
The end result was very acceptable. An A/B comparison of the before and after
processing, revealed a perceptable lose in overall presence, but the positive
benefits were 10 to 1, BETTER.

Of Music". In a recent news interview, Johnson described the new work:
"Body of Music is a mime piece designed to bring to life the sound of silence.
Mime theatre has traditionally been preoccupied with silence. In "Body of
Music", the sounds are part of the internal soundscape heard within the mind
of the mime and the individual audience member. It is not, and cannot be
a shared experience. Body of Music was created to give life to movement."

BMS jazz client gains even MORE success
Winter 1998
Jazz percussionist Darryl Alexander produced his first two CD album projects
here at Boggess Music & Sound. His albums, "Coast To Coast" and
"17th Street" are getting steady air play nationally and in Europe
thanks to his new record deal with Pretige Records. Boggess played various
synth and piano keyboard solos on the CDs, which also featured many Ohio
jazz artists. Alexander's CD's are charting sales worldwide, and are currently
being played as theme and bumper music on the Maury Pauvich show. Boggess
also performed keyboards on Darryl's
"Tea For Two"

BMS produces soundtrack for General Motors video
July thru August 1997
Producer, Ron Hughes, from GM-Lordstown's Video department contracted Boggess
Music & Sound to create original music, sound effects and
editorials for their new (26 minute) video project, "The Image Of
Lordstown". The video features the combined efforts and talents of many
GM-Lordstown employees and the voice' of Bruce Hughes on vocals. They recreated
the music video, "Remember The Times", by Micheal Jackson. All of
the dance routines and characters were played by GM Lordstown management
and UAW employees. The lyrics were changed to sing, "we believe in the cars
that we build." The entire video brought labor (UAW) and management (GM)
together, where relationships were enhanced by socializing together during
the goal and process of making of the video project.
The video is now completed. GM Lordstown hosted a special showing
to the public, employees, and to the Vice President of General Motors, and
guest of honor, George Voinovitch, on August 18th, 1997 at the plant.

Two recent student film projects
November thru December 1997
In November and December '97, student filmmakers Ana Luzardo-Flores &
Dia Kontaxis, both from Ohio University's Film School in Athens, Ohio,
were at Boggess Music & Sound for post audio editorials on each of their
individual thesis & second year film projects. Both projects required
extensive dialog editorials. BMS also provided sound effects design and Foley
for the films. Ana's film, "The Other Woman" is a 12 minute
16mm B&W drama about a nightmare about a love triangle, as told through
the eyes of the 'other woman'. Boggess wrote an original music score
for Ana's film, "The Other Woman." Dia's film, "Aqua Vitae"
is a 10 minute film was edited on AVID, and was about a girl with a dream
she could only make real for herself. Both films are finished and to
be featured at various film festivals in the first quarter of 1998.

BMS gets
Micro
Technology Unlimited's Krystal
2400 upgrade... PLUS!
January 2001
We just upgraded our MicroSound DAW software to MicroEditor 5.3 adding
adds approx.150 new features. The most interesting improvement
is the DirectX plugin intereface that imports third party effects
and processing software! We can now record with 16 & 24bit
resolution, calculating the math internally using dual 56 bit processors!
This means extremely fast and accurate computations for the ultimate
in recording quality. For more information on why BMS chose MicroSound, and
why we didn't choose Pro Tools, Sonic Solutions or another hard disk system,
visit MTU DETAILS
and be enlightened.
Our MicroSound was manufactured by MTU (Micro Technologies Unlimited,
Inc.), in Raleigh, N. Carolina. The system has 512+ tracks and finally...
compressors & limiters! Our current system has an ATX mother board w/MMX,
a 233MHZ Pentium II processor, 256MB RAM, and a Adaptec SCSI card accessing
Iomega Zip and 2GB Jaz carts. Additional upgrades featured MTU's new Krystal
2400 DSP card that's 15 times faster than our previous DSP card. Mixes are
instant because the new system allows up to 26 tracks to mix dynamically,
without writing them to disk. We've also upgraded the MicroTools
to version 2.0a software (includes: noise removal, accurate sample rate
conversions & pitch-corrected-time-shifts, etc). Noise removal used to
take a 10 to 1 ratio in time process... that's now 2 to
1! We also picked up a 14" NEC C400 monitor to make
our MicroSound DAW portable, facilitating remote editorial services to video
production studios.

We keep improving our sound editorial software tools!
Continually Updated...
We added Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge 5.0f software to our arsenal
of sound and processing tools! This in no way replaces our MicroSound MicroEditor
software... that IS impossible! But IT DOES contribute an enormous
potential, by adding digital processing tools & effects, including; reverbs,
flangers, phasers, distortions, echos, delays, pitch manipulations, noise
gates, compression, chorus, vibrato, wah-whas, multi-tap delays and effects
too numerous to list!
A word about our DirectX plugins...
For those who are counting, we currently have (63) DirectX effects
plugins to choose from. All of which can be imported into the MicroSound
's 512 tracks as needed, and auditioned in real time. We're just guessing,
but we easily have the digital effects & signal processing power equivilent
to $2,000,000+ in outboard effects gear!
For instance... most studios who use outboard compressors, have maybe,
4 to 8 units, at a cost of $450-$750 each for good ones. With DirectX plugins,
you can use the same software compressor as many times, on as many tracks
as you need to. If you need the benefits of compression 400 times, on 400
individual tracks of audio, you have it! We're not mathematicians, but with
63 DirectX plugins... we'd easily stump Einstein with the number of possibilities
and equivilent cost comparisons!
Most interesting is the Acoustic Mirror DirectX
plugin that models actual rooms and acoustical spaces for awesome sounding
ambiences & reverbs. This program superimposes any sound, (ie: your vocals,
drums & etc.) into REAL locations modeled by using 'convolution' math.
We've used Lexicon digital outboard reverbs... forget Lexicons!...
Acoustic Mirror rooms and halls sound so real that it's like an out-of-body
experience... you're THERE!
Sonic Foundry's effects and processing software works beautifully with the
MicroSound's DirectX plugin interface. MicroEditor can IMPORT, EXPORT
and SAVE .WAV formatted audio files with any BMS project! SO... aside
from the MicroSound being a powerful recording, production and editing
tool, it now has the AWESOME effects of Sound Forge 5.0f. A very
POWERFUL combination!
