TAMPA -
Gary Boggess, musician, composer, sound effects designer
and owner of Boggess Music & Sound, has been busy at his new audio post
production studio in the peaceful countryside of Lutz, in North of Tampa,
Florida. The new studio opened in March 2002, and has been booked for numerous
music CD projects, films and commercials ever since. The following is an
attempt to provide an overview of some of Gary Boggess' most interesting
work and career highlights.
Boggess relocated his studio
to Central Florida to further his commitment to film sound. In January of
2001, Boggess began an aggressive effort to build a new BMS studio facility
in Tampa, Florida. After a year and two months of design consultations, special
orders, intensive labor in acoustical wall construction, wiring and installation,
Boggess had completed building a world class studio! The new studio features
the ultimate in acoustical design and aesthetics, including natural surrounding
light. See it here:Studio Tour
Who
is Gary Boggess?
To start with, let's
clear the air of false rumors, speculations, and other misleading assumptions:
Gary Boggess is not a recording studio owner! In a loose sort of way he is,
but that is clearly a by-product of necessity! Although it's true that Gary
Boggess has become so many things to so many people... he is first and foremost,
Gary Boggess the musician and music composer. In 1972, Gary cofounded a
progressive rock/jazz band named I Don't Care, that
landed an album with Buddha/United Artists in 1976. He is an accomplished
musical artist who was declared a virtuoso by Kent State University's Music
Department in 1980. Since, he has more than proven himself and recieved "the
nod" from two of the people he admired most and considered his mentors...
one a top composer and the other a top film sound designer. Figure that out
and he'll buy you a large cup at Starbucks.
Although Gary Boggess practices a variety of roles that includes; recording
engineer, a music producer, an arranger, an editor, a Foley artist, a sound
effects designer, an audio systems specialist, a synthesist, a MIDI expert
and MIDI programmer, a studio mixer, a boom operator, a mastering engineer,
a lyricist, a writer, and an all around general audio wizard... it's important
to recognize that he's all of those things ONLY because he is FIRST
a gifted musician, performer and music composer. It has been an honor
for Gary to serve on the Advisory Board at Tampa's International Academy
of Design & Technology (IADT), where he is often invited to lecture
to classes in recording, music scoring * production, feature film sound effects
design and Foley.
With his new studio facility, his music and sound production capabilities
are state-of-the-art with a focus on his creative skills. But as Boggess
asserts: "Way too many studios make the mistake of using the equipment
they bought to validate their services. I think it's absurd! Although my
studio is very well equipped, my clients learn to be more interested in the
level of professionalism and artistic skills I bring to the table, than they
are in the facility itself. It's not about the gear you have, it's what you
can produce with it. Anyone can buy a truck load of professional audio gear
from Sam Ash with a credit card, but you can't buy what I have to offer a
music or film project! I've always said: owning Tiger Wood's golf clubs is
nice if that's what you're all about... but it doesn't mean you can play
HIS game!"
BMS Opens
New Studio in Tampa
Since moving to Tampa, Gary has worked for
a variety of projects. The first was the mastering of three CD music &
software products (a total of 60 music titles) for
Cabaret Software, Inc. of Sterling,
VA in the fall of 2000. After 18 months of construction, the studio opened
in March 2002. BMS had it's first sessions with Turtledove Productions who
produced a (12) song gospel CD with singer, Diane Hall. An all original gospel
music celebration of praise. This is the first CD project produced at Boggess
Music & Sound's new studio facility in Tampa, Florida!
In February 2003, B12 Productions, of Los Angeles, hired Boggess to sub-contract
film production audio crew for a WAVE Ice Cream TV commercial for a TV commercial
for Lotte-Snow's WAVE ice cream. The spot was shot at the
Jack Russel Memorial Stadium in Clearwater. The commercial featured the
New York Yankee's new star slugger, Hideki Matsui, of Japan. Boggess assembled
a team that included one of Florida's best location audio specialists, Carl
Carden, (CFPS), of Orlando.
The studio
started a series of sessions including HCG 5-Star Productions III of Tampa
who produced demos for artists in development. Gerry David, President/COO,
and owner, Kevin Thomas of Vitarich Labs,
Inc. of Naples, Florida chose BMS to produce a 40-minute CD of a roundtable
discussion exploring the unique qualities of their new line of adaptigen
nutritional products. Boggess was dialog recordist-mixer for the studio's
first film project in Florida, for independent feature film,
"Little Men" for which Gary built his own sound
cart.
In September 2004, Boggess edited & remastered a voice over demo CD for film actress, Marlene Cameron. Marlene brought all her cassettes and CD's of her voice work, and we put our heads together to make sense of it. Eventually, we assembled three demo collections of her work: Narration, Story and Characters. Cameron is a veteran Broadway actress who's credits would make you head spin. Older now, she works mostly as a voice artist, and is the voice of the ET at Universal Studios in Orlando.
Boggess was hired by ADR Supervisor, Kimberly Harris, of Soundelux, (via Regency/20th Century Fox Films in Hollywood). Harris produced ADR for Forest Whitaker's new feature film, "First Daughter" released September 24, 2004. Actor Michael Milhoan, who played a secret service agent named Block, had a few lines that were too muffled in the original production sound. So he came to BMS to rerecord them.
January 2004, Boggess & Carden teamed up again to provide location sound for national cable TV commercials for ROOMS TO GO! The spot was produced by LBC, (an LA ad firm) and features a NASCAR race car speeding around the RTG warehouse, "to get your order." A spectacular ramp jump was filmed with the Matrix camera system, and high speed 35mm film cameras, as the car flew into a Rooms To Go delivery truck! This was RTG's biggest budget commercial production to date. See the commercial here: LBC RTG NASCAR
In February, Boggess was
hired as location audio mixer/recordist for a three day shoot in Fort Meyers
at the Hammond Stadium with the baseball greats, the Minnesota Twins. The
crew shot interviews of coach, Ron Gardenhire, and segments for the team's
score board and for the seasons 2004 TV promos & individual player info
features. The 2004 season promotionals were produced by Dan Orozco, and directed
by Steve Mulholland, both of Met/Hodder Productions in Minneapolis, MN.
Gary Boggess never knows what's next. One day he's an
IFB mixer for Disney's "Million Dollar Dreams" live uplink to satellite media
event! Next he's producing a YouTube video ad
for Certified Nutrition of Sarasota, Florida. Or
producing inhouse audio materials for Bob's Carpet of Tampa, with Nu' Visions
Marketing Agency, or producing Theresa Loder's poetry CD titled "Beach Access,
or producing the narrative audio for The United States Central Command Center,
Mac Dill AFB, Tampa, Florida. Every day in Florida offers another
opportunity to seize the creative reigns of audio and use his
talents.
Music
CD Production In
Tampa
Gary went on location to record a 15-song concert/CD
album for Shiloh Christian Center in Melbourne, Florida. With associate Carl
Carden and assistant Mike Jones, a 16-track recording studio was set up in
about 4 hours. Using (2) TASCAM DA-88 8-tracks, Boggess recorded the entire
project in about 2.25 hours. With all original music, Shiloh's 55 member
vocal ensemble and band performed live without a retake.
Tampa songwriter & producer, John Centinaro has produced several songs
at BMS. John Centinaro is a long time Tampa area song writer who's roots
in music go back to the late sixties when he managed the group,
"MERCY" who had
a hit on Warner Brothers Records titled: "Love Can Make You Happy" which
hit number two on the charts. John's has been a regular customer and Boggess
has arranged about nine songs. The recordings include the songs, "I Fell
In Love In Ybor City" & "Moonlite Night In Tampa Bay."
The band Crossfire recently recorded an 11-song demo CD here at BMS, from
which we also produced an edited CD sampler demo.
Guitarist & songwriter, Kevin Sergent & the Corridor band hired Boggess as their producer for their concept-progressive-metal rock album.. Mark Vanderbilt, the original vocalist of the power metal band Kamelot, sings for Corridor. The band tracked all their guitars, bass, keyboards and vocals here at BMS. Boggess is adding some Minimoog synth tracks, and writing orchestrations. Hear the MP3 sample: "Planet Green"
Boggess also produced Latin singer-songwriter Ruth
Pizarro who debuted her album produced by Gary Boggess in the Summer of
2006.
The project represents a unique departure for genre in the Christian &
Latin markets. The music of "Emaus," was the collaborative
effort of Ruth Pizarro and Gary Boggess. Ruth is a very gifted songwriter
and vocalist. Her latin melodies inspired Boggess to produce some of the
best latin-jazz arrangements in his career. As producer & composer, Boggess
performed all of the CD's music, with exception to guitar, which was played
by virtuoso guitarist Rick
Pupello. Hear the MP3 sample:
"Emaus"
In 2007, Boggess began producing an EP for Florida
based rock group, "The "7th Floor Band." The music is
still in various stages of production. A sample of the song "Better Day"
can be heard at The 7th Floor Band's web site at
MySpace.
Film Audio Post & Sound
Design
Boggess resumes audio post production services with the first feature
film project since opening the new studio. He produced the entire audio post
editorials, Foley, sound design and soundtrack mix for the feature film,
"Loren Cass." The film was shot locally
in St. Petersburg, Florida. At first, Boggess became the 3rd Unit mixer and
boom operator for some needed reshoots. He then went into a long period of
audio post production, where he rebuilt the entire audio tracks from scratch,
scene by scene. All of the actors we given the full Foley sound effects:
cloth for movement, sounds for every prop they handled and then Boggess walked
for every character in the film... even breathed for them when necessary.
All of the background ambiences, car bys, doors... EVERYTHING was recreated.
In the end, Gary had recreated 90+ percent of the entire film soundtrack!
Since, the film has found a home at numerous film festivals such as
the CineVegas festival in Vegas, and at Switzerland's
Locarno International
Film
Festival, and several
others. "Loren
Cass," was one of 5 nominees selected from a pool of films chosen by the
Gotham Awards
sponsors, Filmmaker Magazine and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in New York
City. Although the film hasn't won any awards, it has gotten some
GREAT sound reviews!

"The
sound editing and effects are truly astounding. The fights sound like they
are actual,
bone-crushing, terrifying fights. The dialog sounds like you are in the room,
the diner, the street,
etc., listening to it exactly. And, unlike, say, a dogma feature, the reality
of it is heightened by
whatever techniques Gary (Boggess) used. As an experience, as a sound and
imagery collage,
it's extraordinary..." -

Boggess was enlisted again as a boom operator with mixer Phillip Harris
for a children's feature film titled, "Scouts Honor." The film is
one of several films being made by PacAtlantic Pictures, a Pinellas-based
company started 20 months ago by actor/writer
Jim Fitzpatrick and his
wife, actress Jodi Knotts
(cousin of actor Don Knotts). Not long after Boggess was
boom operator again for a dramatic feature film, "She Could Be
You"working again with associate and mixer, Carl Carden, (CFPS), of
Orlando.
All Digital Sound For
Picture
Gary significantly upgraded his studio in 2006. Included was new computers
for the MicroSound DAW, a 512-track computer hard disk recording system with
fully automated mixing and digital effects. "BMS is truely a one stop
shop facility. We can provide independent filmmakers the audio post editorial
services they need to produce entire soundtracks for feature films, including
sound effects design, ADR and Foley effects. Our
location in rural North Tampa, in Lutz, is perfect for the creative
filmmaker or music producer who wants to get out of the stuffy commercial
studios, and work like an artist in a relaxed "low pressure" environment,"
said Boggess.
Boggess' studio is a full service facility, and capable of music CD album
production as well. We support most of the popular recording formats, and
have an arsenal of MIDI synths, four Emu sampling
keyboards, digital effects and signal processing. Our MicroSound digital
audio workstation (DAW) is the ultimate tool for film sound editorials, music
production and mixing. Another mainstay was TASCAM's DA-88 digital eight
track recorder with the SY-88 SMPTE sync card. "The DA-88 gives the studio
a common format so we can import and export film sound projects from most
any location in the world!
In recent years, BMS has found a market for forensic and restoration audio
services. The studio bought MicroSound's DNoise
"noise removal"software programs a few years ago. In December of 2007, we
bought software we describe to call the "secret weapon!"
We now have the best software we can get for forensic
audio work and for restoring older
or noisy recordings, "which has saved the day for several video producers
lately," said Boggess.
Music & Effects Often Merge
In 1990, Boggess was commissioned by
the Fine Arts Council Trumbull to write a ten minute orchestral work for
Warren's Opening Night Celebration. The work he titled "Millennium," was
well received and was repeated in '91 and released as a cassette album along
with his new dance music compositions.
"Millennium" was a breakthrough piece. It was the first time Boggess was
able to achieve and realize his lifetime goal of producing a large scale
orchestral work, using electronic music instruments. Newly acquired MIDI
and orchestral sound modules enabled him to create the dense orchestration
and musical performance values that he had only dreamed of, since 1972.
In June '96, Gary premiered an original music score for Nicholas Johnson's
new work, "SegWay," (a multi-media stage play utilizing
dance, mime, film, lighting and theatre) at the Ruth Page Dance Center, in
Chicago. Reviewers for The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Reader wrote: "Boggess'
music sounded like something John Williams might have written..." "Boggess'
Hollywood sounding score would have been more appropriate for a Steven Spielburg
film..."
Boggess put the "ice" in Arnold Schwarzenegger's character as "Mr. Freeze,"
in the new movie "Batman and Robin," scheduled for release in June '97. Last
March, Gary was contracted as a sound effects
recordist by Lance Brown and Bruce Stambler ('96 Oscar Winner for sound
effects editorial for "Ghost And The Darkness") at Sound Storm Studios, in
Burbank, CA. Boggess collected two hours of ice and
snow sounds for the film in Conneautville, PA.
The Fall of
1998 and the Winter of 1999 was dominated
by five film projects. Gary scored & posted "The Other Woman"
by Anna Luzardo-Flores, and "Between Friends" by Audra Lindsey, and
posted "Aqua Vitae" by Dia Kontaxis, and "Victor" by Mark Moody.
The four short films totaled 90 minutes of film sound editorials and mixing,
all flawlessly produced with Boggess' MicroSound digital audio workstation.
In April 1999, Boggess produced the Foley sound effects for the 95 minute
feature film, "Seventh Veil", for LA based film company, Heron Pictures,
to be released by SONY Tri-Star Pictures.

Discography
Boggess' career has been fruitful, having
created over 70 hours of original music for
a wide variety of productions. He's a 28 year veteran of Ohio's
music scene. Gary's progressive rock/jazz group, "I Don't
Care," landed an album with Buddha/United Artists in 1976. The band played
throughout Ohio and western PA, and were among the mainstay bands in Cleveland
night clubs and on the Agora circuit. During these years Boggess shared the
stage, opening for national acts; Bruce Springsteen, Gentle Giant, King Crimson,
Dr. Hook, Tommy James & the Shondells, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Larry
Coryell, The Glass Harp, The James Gang, Spirit and Frank Zappa.
After the IDC band unraveled in '76, Gary began
to assemble his own music production studio. His electronic
music studio grew in steps as he collected various equipments. In 1977,
he purchased the Polyfusion 2000 Series modular synthesizer. Since,
his pursuit has been to produce new music for these
new tools.
In 1982, Boggess performed synth & keyboards on the CD "Starhand Visions,"
an album by singer, songwriter, Gary Grimes. Boggess is featured on
the album with musicians such as Mark Benson (1964...The Tribute), Donny
Iris (Ah Leah fame), George Sipl (Eric Carmen keyboardist, Hungry Eyes),
B.E.Taylor (BETaylor.com), Pete Hewlitt (backup vocals Carly Simon, Billy
Joel), Andy Kubizewski (Exotic Birds), Frank Pellino (I Don't Care Band &
Graf), Egor Flagg (Wild Cherry), Gary Markasky (Michael Stanley Band) and
many more. The project developed a few styles that remind you of great
bands that you've listened to over the years. Re-released in February
9, 2002, "Starhand Visions" is getting airplay in Japan, Germany, South Africa
and in Canada! SEE: Starhand

Gary was composer in-residence at Kent State University's Trumbull Campus
from 1980-82. He has created music soundtracks for over 45 theatrical productions
at Kent State University's Theatre, Summer Stock, Children's Theatre, Trumbull
New Theatre, The Youngstown Playhouse, The Cleveland Playhouse, Cleveland
State University Theatre and The Lincoln Ford Center in N.Y.C.
He has written many music scores for corporate videos including videos for: GM, B.F. Goodrich, Babcock & Wilcox, Xerox, Goodyear, PPG, National Geographic, American Greetings and NASA. His 1980 score, "Dance For the Planet," for Diamond Shamrock AG Chem, won an Award of Excellence from the Cleveland Society Of Communicating Arts.
He's written music for numerous national artists,
including dancers and theatrical companies. Gregg Goldston and The Goldston
School For Mimes (where Marcel Marceau teaches annually) commissions Gary
for special music and sound design on a regular basis. In August 1996, the
classical mime troupe, The Invisible People, performed in Hong Kong to Gary's
colorful sound design and dance music. In August 2006, Boggess premiered a
new musical work written for the Alithea Dance Theatre's performance of "Angel's
Rising" at the United Nations.
A Hollywood
Edge
In spring '92, Hollywood's top sound effects designer, Alan Howarth, invited
Gary to be an associate sound effects editor at his Electric Melody Studios
facility, above George Lucas' Skywalker Sound Studios in Santa Monica,
California. Howarth's many film credits include: John Capenter's "Halloween,"
and the films "The Hunt For Red October," "Star Gate," "Back To The Future
I-III," "Poltergeist I-II," "Indiana Jones," "The Little Mermaid," "Escape
From New York" and "Star Trek" movies I-VI and the list goes on. While in
LA, Boggess worked with other top sound designers
who are now a network of associates, peers and best of all, friends.
While in LA, Gary designed sound effects for feature films including HBO's
film, "Barbarians At The Gate," starring James Garner.
The film was awarded the 1993 Golden Globe for 'best made for TV film. He
designed sound effects for film trailers including: "Robot Wars," "Mandroid,"
"Subspecies I & II," "Puppetmaster IV," "The Lurking Fear" and for the
TV commercials: "Pepsi: Algebra Class," and Lark's "Jump Jet" & "Side
Car."
Boggess also worked as a sound effects editor on "La Carpa," Brams Stoker's
Dracula" and as an assistant sound effects editor on "Army Of Darkness,"
and the trailer for "Jurrasic Park."
Boggess composed and premiered a five minute orchestral music work titled
"Butterfly Theme," for the presentation of the new $70 million dollar downtown
Las Vegas project, "The Fremont Street
Experience."
In late '93, Lucas sold the facilities, and the Lantana Center was shifting
gears making it difficult for Electric Melody to do business, so Boggess
returned to Warren to reopen his studio. In July 2000, Gary relocated his
entire facility to North Tampa, in Lutz, Florida.
Venues In Warren, Ohio
When asked why he remained in his hometown for so long, Boggess said: "I
had an 19 year investment in my studio, in downtown Warren, and 30 years
into Warren's musical legacy. I fulfilled many ambitions there."
Although Boggess doesn't perform music live on a regular basis, he did appear
as keyboardist with the jazz group,
Network,
in the mid nineties. Network's repertoire was centered in contemporary and
new age jazz. The band was adept at reaching into most any genre... playing
Miles Davis, Herbie Handcock, Weather Report, Sanborn, Shadofax, Yellow Jackets,
Kirk Whalum and Hiroshima. Network also had numerous originals. Boggess
enlisted the band to help play an original score for a stage play titled
"Don't Look Now." The play was written by the '50's & '60's beat poet,
playwrite and painter, Kenneth Patchen. Gary produced the jazz recording
which was then used as the live score for the stage production at Kent State
University, under a grant from the Ohio Arts Council.
While
in the Ohio studio, Gary worked as
a producer and
arranger
for many musicians, singers and songwriters, including albums
for several gospel artists. Because his own music explores many genres, he's
able to identify and work with a diverse group of musical artists.
Jazz percussionist,
Darryl Alexander, of Youngstown, Ohio, has produced
two CD albums with Gary, and his third is currently in
production.Alexander's CD's are charting sales worldwide,
and are currently being played as theme and bumper music on the Maury Pauvich
show.In '95, Gary created music and sound effects for Winner International's
anti-theft device, The Club. The national TV commercial "The Club: Saturn,"
also featured award winning graphic animation by Image Producers of Canfield,
Ohio.
Last summer, Boggess produced music jingles for The Cafaro Company's Eastwood, Northpark, Southland, Millcreek and South Hill Malls. "Gary stayed dedicated to our project from concept to final production. He provided a top quality and appropriate composition, not just a jingle. The signature song for the five shopping centers has been well received and remains memorable in the market(s)," said Linda Blasic, Creative Director.in May '99, Gary co-produced a music jingle and theme for the new baseball team, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. BMS is also in the midst of producing an album CD projects for Christian rock band, SPV. Recent albums include one for the rock group "Flying Circus" and the other for an Atlanta based rap duo "RCT." This is RCT second album project with BMS. World renowned harpist, Kirk Kupensky, had finished recording his second album at BMS as well. (It's 2008 and Kirk is still our featured artist!) :)
In Winter 2000, Boggess was the producer for four
CD albums! Three of the CD's were Christian childrens music projects produced
for Nuclear Family Ministries. The fourth CD was a music album for Christian
alternative rock group, Saint Peter's Vision
(SPV).
Bringing It Home to
Tampa!
In Tampa, Boggess will continue his 30 year legacy, by providing his creative
services to film and video producers, advertising agencies and musical artists.
He'll also work as a jingle writer and sound producer for radio and TV
commercials, and plans to expand his audio services to include multimedia,
video games, and the internet.
Gary often incorporates the talents of area musicians and vocalists in his
productions, and Tampa will prove to be a tremendous resource for Boggess
Music & Sound's future productions!
